Rudolf: A Salutary Pipeline

(2007)

Led by artist Matthew McGuinness, this project raised awareness and educated audiences about tangible and sustainable methods of alternative fuel.

Combining urban environmental activism with civic-based art forms, McGuinness and his collaborators manufactured biodiesel, an alternative fuel, and used the byproduct of this refining process to create a series of petroleum-themed sculptures.

Made from glycerin, these translucent soap sculptures also contained found objects -car wheel rims, hood ornaments, mud flaps, and gas cans – that were trapped inside like fossilized specimens, a metaphor for our outdated use of fossil fuels.

To demonstrate the benefits of renewable sources of fuel, audiences and local businesses were invited to an installation and exhibition of Rudolf

The 62 Collective further explored concerns about environmental problems and innovations in renewable energy design through a series of talks and a tour of the Chelsea neighborhood’s many car garages, gas stations, and industrial mechanic shops.

Matthew McGuinness project was supported by Conjunction Arts through our fiscal sponsorship program.
